John Christensen Appointed Chancellor of UNO
Omaha - University of Nebraska President James B. Milliken today announced the appointment of Dr. John E. Christensen as the next Chancellor the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Christensen, 58, has been interim chancellor since September 2006. He was chosen after a national search chaired by Dr. Shelton Hendricks, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. The appointment is subject to the approval of the Board of Regents at its May 18 meeting.
"Over the past eight months, John has demonstrated integrity and openness and has provided energetic leadership for the campus," Milliken said. "It's clear that John Christensen loves UNO, and he has an ambitious vision for its future. He has outlined objectives which will ensure that no time or momentum is lost at UNO."
He added, "We had an impressive group of candidates and four outstanding finalists for this position, reinforcing what we all know: that UNO is an excellent institution with enormous potential."
Milliken added that by taking the position immediately, Christensen will be able to quickly begin searches for two key positions – his replacement as vice chancellor for academic affairs and a permanent vice chancellor for business and finance. He will also be able to complete the appointment of a new athletic director in the near future.
Christensen has spent his entire academic career at UNO, beginning in 1978 as a faculty member in the College of Education's Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders. He subsequently served as chair of that department for 12 years.
Christensen received his bachelor's degree in speech and communication from Dana College, his master's degree in speech-language pathology from UNO and his Ph.D. in speech-language pathology from the University of Kansas. He becomes the first UNO graduate to serve as its Chancellor. Christensen has been active in Omaha community affairs as well as national professional organizations relating to his academic field. He and his wife, Jan, have three adult sons.
