UNO Concert Choir to Tour Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands

Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Concert Choir will travel to Europe this month. On Friday, May 4, the night before they leave, the choir will perform a 7 p.m. Bon Voyage Concert at Faithful Shepard Presbyterian Church, 165th and West Center, in Omaha. During their two-week tour, the choir will visit Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands and perform several concerts in each country. The May 4 concert is free and open to the public.

The Concert Choir is under the leadership of recently appointed UNO Director of Choral Activities, Matthew Harden. "One of the highlights of this tour will be a four-day visit to one of Omaha's Sister Cities, Braunschweig, Germany. There we will perform three concerts and be honored with a reception hosted by the Mayor of the city in the Town Hall," said Harden.

The Concert Choir is part of the UNO Department of Music, which enrolls more than 200 music majors. In addition, many students who are not music majors participate in music ensembles as they obtain degrees in other areas.

The 2007 program will include a variety of music by American composers, including a piece newly composed by Tim Vallier, a choir member and two pieces written by Kenton Bales, a UNO faculty member. The choir will also perform selections from Mid-Winter Songs, by Morton Lauridsen, and several traditional American spirituals.

The UNO Concert Choir is the premier choral ensemble in the UNO Department of Music. This select group is comprised of approximately 40 singers including both music majors and non-music majors. The Concert Choir has had three previous tours in Europe over the past ten years during which they performed in Austria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Slovakia and Sweden.

Harden joined the faculty at UNO in 2006 as the director of Choral Activities, where he directs the Concert Choir, University Chorus and teaches conducting, choral literature and choral methods. He came to UNO with more than 20 years of previous teaching and conducting experience. Harden has worked with a number of internationally recognized conductors including Bruce Browne and Eph Ehly.

For more information, contact Shellie Harden, coordinator of music outreach and recruitment, at (402) 554-2177 or sharden@mail.unomaha.edu.
