UNO Commencement Dec. 15 at the Civic
Omaha - More than 900 students will graduate Friday, Dec. 15, during the UNO winter commencement ceremony. The event will be held at the Omaha Civic Auditorium, 1804 Capitol Ave., beginning at 2 p.m.
Steve Massara, an Elkhorn, Neb., native, will present the student commencement address. He will receive a bachelor of science in education degree with an emphasis in exercise science. Massara will begin working in the Washington, D.C., office of Sen. Chuck Hagel in January and then enroll in the U.S. Air Force Officer Training School in July.
The commencement ceremony also will feature the following:
Magdalena García, founder and director of Omaha’s El Museo Latino, will receive the UNO Alumni Association’s Citation for Alumnus Achievement. García founded El Museo Latino in 1993. It is one of just 11 Latino museums in the country, and the only one between Chicago and Denver. Since 1997, attendance at the museum has topped 50,000 visitors annually. At El Museo Latino, García directs the museum’s extensive community efforts, including educational programs, art classes, lectures, workshops, artist-in-residencies, teacher in-service workshops and dance classes. The museum also organizes and presents events during the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration in May and Hispanic Heritage Month in September.
