UNO Athletic Director David Herbster Resigns; Tom Frette to Serve as Interim AD

Omaha - University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Athletic Director David Herbster submitted his resignation to UNO Interim Chancellor John Christensen today, Nov. 27, effective immediately.  Herbster will continue to work for UNO on a special appointment.  He will perform university promotion, development and outreach duties through June 2007, and will continue to report to Christensen.

Herbster, who came to UNO in 2005, said that the controversy surrounding UNO Athletics and its finance problems during the past year had diminished his ability to lead.  He added that stepping aside was best for the department and the campus.

"In light of the events of the past six months, I do not believe I can be effective leading this program," he said.  "At this point, it would be difficult for me to move this program forward.  I told the staff that if I were to get to this point, that I would step aside."

While Herbster has been the athletic director, UNO has won three national championships, finished second and third in the Director's Cup (which honors institutions maintaining broad-based athletic programs), won 13 conference championships, compiled a department student-athlete grade point average of 3.17 and last year logged almost 3,500 hours of athletic department community service.

"Over the past several months, David has make good progress in stabilizing athletic budgets, working with donors and rectifying booster accounts," Christensen said.  "UNO has won championships and our student athletes continue to be a source of pride, athletically and academically.  In the current environment, however, I concur with David that he can now best serve the university by focusing his attention on development and outreach."

A search for an athletic director will begin immediately.  Tom Frette, UNO head athletic trainer, will serve as interim athletic director.   Frette has worked in UNO Athletics for 18 years.
