UNO NBDC Receives National Accreditation

Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Nebraska Business Development Center (NBDC) has received full accreditation from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Of the 63 state and regional business development centers in the nation, the NBDC was one of only six that received accreditation without conditions.

“This is a rare distinction, and this was the first time that the U.S. SBA honored this by having a special presentation,” said Robert Bernier, assistant dean of the UNO College of Business Administration and state director of the NBDC.

UNO was joined in the recognition by the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Georgia and programs in Oklahoma, Vermont and Puerto Rico. The NBDC had to meet requirements of strategic planning, professional development of programs, and people and outcome measures in order to gain accreditation.

Steven Preston, the new administrator of the SBA, recently presented plaques to the honored programs at the Association of Small Business Development Centers meeting in Houston. Previously, Preston was a senior vice president for First Data in Omaha.

The UNO center is one of five original centers established across the nation in 1977. It provides consulting and educational services to small businesses throughout Nebraska.

“We’re very proud of this distinction achieved by less than 10 percent of the small business development centers,” Bernier said. “NBDC is poised for coming changes in the accreditation process that will emphasize outcomes as well as inputs.”

Bernier said the NBDC traditionally tracks the number of jobs created by its assistance and the amount of investment in new business and business expansions enabled by its capital access programs. In 2005, more than 3,800 jobs were created, and $44.8 million was invested in new and expanding business with the help of the NBDC.

The NBDC is a cooperative program of the U.S. Small Business Administration and the UNO College of Business Administration.
