UNO Cesar Chavez Celebration March 24
Omaha - The 2006 Cesar Chavez celebration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) is set for Friday, March 24, at noon in the Milo Bail Student Center (MBSC) Ballroom. Tickets are on sale in the MBSC Business Office. The cost is $10 for faculty and staff, $5 for students and $15 for the general public.
UNO student Jorge Gomez will host the event. He is a member of the Association of Latin American Students (ALAS) and Sigma Lambda Beta, a national Latino fraternity.
The keynote speaker will be Marty Ramirez, mental health practitioner with the University Health Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Musical entertainment will be provided by the South Omaha Arts Institute, under the direction of UNO alumnus Marcos Mora.
The event will commemorate the life of Chavez, who advocated for better wages and working conditions for the nation’s farm workers. In 1952, he began the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) to strive for equal rights for agricultural workers.
Chavez died April 23, 1993, at the age of 66 and was posthumously awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994. The U.S. Postal Service issued a commemorative first-class stamp bearing his image in 2003.
