Grand Opening for UNO Speech Center Set for Jan. 25

Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) and its School of Communication will celebrate the grand opening of its newest resource, The Speech Center, Wednesday, Jan. 25. The open house will take place in 183 Arts and Sciences Hall (ASH) from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

UNO Chancellor Nancy Belck will deliver welcoming remarks. Karen Dwyer, School of Communication basic speech course director, and Jennifer Dalbey, UNO Speech Center coordinator, will introduce participants to the center and the services it offers to faculty, staff and students across all disciplines.

The Speech Center is a pairing of two resources. The first is the Basic Course Room (183 ASH), which began as a speech lab in 1997.

"Created as a support lab for the basic Public Speaking Fundamentals course, this resource provides currently enrolled public speaking students with access to 18 computers, outlining technology, online research and DVD viewing of recorded class speeches for evaluation," Dalbey said.

The room is staffed by Public Speaking Fundamentals instructors prepared to assist students with the entire speech-making process.

"Initially developed by Dwyer and Deborah Smith-Howell, now assistant vice chancellor, the room serves approximately 1,000 students per semester enrolled in any one of the 40 sections of the Public Speaking Fundamentals course," Dalbey said.

The second and newest resource is the Speech Consulting Room (185 ASH).

"Seeing the need for continued assistance with public speaking and presentational skills, Dwyer developed the Speech Consulting Room," Dalbey said. "It focuses on the ‘Speaking Across the Curriculum' program designed to assist students presenting in other classes, as well as faculty members in developing presentation assignments."
