University of Nebraska Students, Faculty and Staff Recognized at Public Health Conference
Omaha - Public health students, faculty, and staff at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) were recognized for their excellence at the recent Public Health Association of Nebraska (PHAN) conference in Grand Island, Nebraska.
The Masters in Public Health (MPH) program, a joint program of UNMC/UNO, received PHAN's highest honor--the Jim Dills distinguished Public Health Service Award. In particular, the MPH program was cited for exhibiting outstanding leadership in establishing and improving public health services at the community and state level. The UNO units most involved with the MPH program are Health Education and Public Administration. Alice Schumaker, a UNO associate professor in Public Administration, serves as the program's director.
MPH program coordinator Valdeen Nelsen received an individual honor. She was given the PHAN Service Award for her outstanding service to the Public Health Association.
Students at UNO and UNMC also received important recognition. Stephen Jackson, a counseling and testing program manager for HIV prevention at the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, received the outstanding student of public health award. As an MPH student at UNO/UNMC, he has provided leadership and initiative in promoting community oriented health care programs.
PHAN also awarded a pair of $250 scholarship to two University of Nebraska students for their outstanding scholarship and dedication. Rosalee Higgs, who works at the Nebraska AIDS Project, is a student in the MPH program. Shavonne Washington, coordinator of the Great Plains Public Health Leadership Institute, is a graduate student in the UNO Health Education program.
