UNO Art Gallery to Host Family Fun Day Nov. 5
Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Art Gallery will host a family fun day Saturday, Nov. 5, in conjunction with the current Faith Ringgold exhibit.
The event, sponsored by Friends of Art, will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Activities will include:
- Art-making activities with artists Gail Dickel, Leah Lowe and Gabrielle Gaines-Liwaru;
- A dance event titled "Aunt Harriet's Journey: Making a Dance Movement Map" featuring The Moving Company, UNO's modern dance performing group;
- Improvisation and dramatic interpretation with students from the UNO Department of Theatre;
- A story corner featuring Ringgold's stories read by members of the Metropolitan Reading Council;
- A treasure hunt in the gallery; and
- Quilting demonstrations.
"Faith Ringgold's work is owned by many of the prestigious museums in the country, and UNO is thrilled to be able to offer families in the metro area this unique opportunity to view her works," said Shari Hofschire, director of the UNO Center for Innovation in Arts Education.
The special one-stop exhibition includes painted storyquilts, tankas – works of oil on canvas with quilted fabric borders, paintings, drawings and the complete set of original illustrations from Ringgold's "Aunt Harriet's Underground Railroad in the Sky," a children's book. It also includes the "Anyone Can Fly" Activities Center, where young people can read Ringgold's books, watch videos of her creating work and create their own projects.
"Art: Keep The Faith (Ringgold)!" runs through Nov. 20. Exhibition sponsors include the Nebraska Arts Council, Joan Gibson and Donald Wurster, and Ray and Frances Gaines.
The gallery is located on the first floor of the Weber Fine Arts Building on the UNO campus. Admission is free, and gallery hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from noon to 4 p.m., Thursday from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Excluding reserved stalls, UNO parking lots are free and open to visitors on Sunday afternoons.
