UNO to Host Chemistry Field Day April 23 in Durham Science Center
Omaha – More than 200 students from area high schools will be balancing equations and preparing solutions Saturday, April 23, at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) in conjunction with the 22nd annual Chemistry Field Day.
The event, which is organized by the chemistry faculty at UNO and Creighton University, will be held in the Durham Science Center on the UNO campus from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The UNO Department of Chemistry is hosting the 2005 competition.
In accordance with the custom of naming the field day by atomic number, the name of this year's event is Titanium. Participating high schools include Bellevue West, Blair, Bryan, Burke, Central, Creighton Prep, Duchesne Academy, Mercy, Millard South, Mt. Michael, Skutt Catholic and Westside, and Farragut and Underwood in Iowa.
Teams of three to five students will compete in six events from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. The teams are classified as either primary or advanced, depending upon how much chemistry the students have studied. The six events are as follows:
Chem Survivor - The object of this event is to survive a number of chemistry intellectual and decision-making challenges in four different sets of circumstances – the island of amazing chemical names, the island of periodic pillar, the island of crossed words and the formula for staying afloat.
Quick Qual - The object of this event is to correctly identify the substance in solution, one cation and one anion.
Gameboard Gallimaufry - The object of this event is to correctly answer as many chemistry questions as possible in 25 minutes. The questions come from a Jeopardy-like game board.
Fax the Facts - The object of this event is to effectively communicate chemical observations in writing between two groups of students on the same team in order to correctly match two sets of five identical solutions in the minimal amount of time.
Serial Dilution to a Better Solution - The object of this event is to quickly and accurately prepare a dilute solution of calcium from a much more concentrated solution and to learn about an instrumental method of measuring very low concentrations.
Equation Balancing Act - The object is to correctly balance as many equations as possible in a 25-minute period. Balanced equations are submitted in a relay-style fashion.
Awards will be presented to the three highest scoring teams in each of the two categories. Awards for distinguished recognition also will be presented in each of the events.
The competition will be followed by a CAPOW (Chemistry and Physics on Wheels) science show by Dan Sullivan at 2:30 p.m. and the awards ceremony at 3:30 p.m. The show and ceremony will be held in the Roskens Hall Auditorium.
