Six Inducted into UNO Bands Hall of Fame
Omaha – Six individuals have been inducted as charter members of the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Bands Hall of Fame. The ceremony was held April 9 in the Strauss Performing Arts Center Recital Hall in conjunction with a concert to benefit the UNO Bands Scholarship Fund.
The UNO Bands Hall of Fame is designed to recognize individuals who have contributed significantly to the music profession in general and who have been actively involved in and supportive of the UNO Bands Program, said James Saker, director of bands at UNO.
Jack and Mary Alice Snider. Jack Snider served as director of the Cornhusker Marching Band and later as director of bands at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has been a guest conductor of the UNO Wind Ensemble on several occasions.
Jay Gilbert. Gilbert is director of bands at Doane College and also has been a guest conductor of the UNO Wind Ensemble on previous occasions.
Chief Master Sgt. Larry MacTaggart. MacTaggart is a former Nebraska high school band director and percussionist, and composer/arranger with the Air Force Heartland of America Band. He currently serves as the chief composer and arranger for the United States Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. He has composed three works for the UNO Wind Ensemble, including "Mt. Vernon Reverie," which was premiered at the April 9 concert with the composer conducting.
James Sawyer. Sawyer is director of bands at Kentwood High School in Grand Rapids, Mich. From 1993 to 1996, he was the assistant director of bands and director of the Maverick Marching Band at UNO.
Timothy Yontz. Yontz is coordinator of fine arts for the Kenosha (Wis.) Public Schools. From 1995 to 2004, he was the assistant director of bands and director of the Maverick Marching Band at UNO.
Recommendations for induction into the UNO Bands Hall of Fame are made by officers of the UNO Wind Ensemble with final approval by the UNO Bands staff.
Each inductee was presented with a commemorative plaque. Photos of the inductees, along with a plaque bearing their names, will be hung in the Strauss Performing Arts Center.
Saker said the induction ceremony will become an annual event.
