31st Annual Brooks Lecture April 14
Omaha - Gilya Gerda Schmidt will deliver the 31st annual Rabbi Sidney H. Brooks Lecture Thursday, April 14. The title of her presentation is "The Many Faces of Martin Buber: Herald of a New Age for Christians and Jews." The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the W.H. Thompson Alumni Center. It is free and open to the public.
Dr. Gerda Schmidt is head of the Department of Religious Studies and chair of the Fern and Manfred Steinfeld Program in Judaic Studies at University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
The annual lecture series is sponsored by the UNO Religious Studies Program, the UNO College of Arts and Sciences, and Temple Israel. It is named in honor of Sidney H. Brooks, who played an integral role in the religious life of the Omaha community for more than 40 years. He served as rabbi of Temple Israel for 33 years before his retirement in 1985. Throughout his life, Brooks was recognized for his pursuit of social justice and relations between Jews and Christians. He died in 1999 at the age of 79.
