UNO Student Leaders Organize First Student Government Conference March 10 at the State Capitol
Omaha - Student leaders at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) have organized the first Student Government Conference Thursday, March 10, at the Nebraska State Capitol.
More than 60 student senators from each of the four University of Nebraska campuses – UNO, the University of Nebraska at Kearney, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska Medical Center – will spend the afternoon interacting with state senators and university officials.
Conference topics include the appropriation of state funds, the impact of the Education Committee on the University of Nebraska, the importance of student governments in universities and leadership at the state level. Activities will begin at 3 p.m. and conclude at 5:45 p.m. with a tour of the capitol building.
Scheduled speakers include Gov. Dave Heineman and Senators Roger Wehrbein, Don Pederson, Ron Raikes and Philip Erdman. James B. Milliken, president of the University of Nebraska, will discuss current university legislation, and Ron Withem, associate vice president for external affairs and director of governmental relations for the University of Nebraska, will discuss the lobbying process.
“This conference will give student leaders an insider’s view of the workings of the State Legislature and the lobbying process,” said event organizer Alexander Williams. Williams serves as the legislative/public relations officer for Student Government at UNO.
Media coverage of the event is welcome.
