EVERYONE, IT SEEMS, IS BUSY.  WOMEN ESPECIALLY FIND THEMSELVES TRYING TO BALANCE TIME AT WORK VERSUS TIME AT HOME.  FITNESS AND WELLNESS CAN GET LOST, AND THAT CAN LEAD TO PROBLEMS, ACCORDING TO UNO ASSISTANT PROFESSOR JENNIFER WHITE.  SHE RESEARCHES FITNESS AND WELLNESS ISSUES THAT WOMEN FACE.

WHITE: "What I am trying to do is help women take a look at their quality of life and realize that if they're not taking care of themselves, and their quality of life via physical activity, then things like the career and the family and those roles suffer due to the fact that the quality of life isn't there."

WHITE POINTS TO TWO THINGS AS IMPEDIMENTS TO FITNESS.

WHITE: "Most of the barriers are things like time and motivation.  Those are the two major barriers, and what I try to do is to teach them about ways to conquer their barriers."

BARRIER BUSTING IS WHAT WHITE CALLS IT.  WHEN SHE WORKS WITH INDIVIDUALS THEY COME UP WITH MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS THAT WORK SPECIFICALLY FOR THEM.

WHITE: "One thing that women don't' realize is that they need to think about exercise the day before they actually do it.  In other words, today's Monday, okay, and I need to exercise on Tuesday.  When is that going to take place in my day? And schedule that into their day."

SHE ALSO STRESSES, THAT FOR MANY WOMEN—ESPECIALLY WOMEN AS THEY AGE—FITNESS AND WELLNESS INVOLVE MODERATE LEVELS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR A HALF HOUR OR MORE A DAY.

WHITE:  "And a way to define moderate intensity for most women would be to say if you can have a very light conversation, maybe say a sentence and then have to catch a breath, then you're probably at a moderate intensity."

AND WHILE THERE ARE OFTEN TWO BIG BARRIERS, THERE ARE ALSO TWO BIG MOTIVATORS FOR WOMEN, TOO.  SOCIAL SUPPORT, WHICH CAN COME FROM A FRIEND OR A SPOUSE, AND SIMPLY LIKING THE ACTIVITY YOU PURSUE.

WHITE:  "I encourage women, actually, to find something they enjoy.  I think enjoyment is the key."

AND GOALS CAN BE HELPFUL, AS LONG AS THEY ARE REASONABLE AND ATTAINABLE.  TRY GOALS LIKE THE FOLLOWING.

WHITE: "Do I sleep better?  Do I go up and down stairs easier?  Do I play with my grandchildren with ease?  Am I able to do activities with them?  Those types of things are things that you're going to want to look for."
