THE HEART OF ANY UNIVERSITY IS ITS LIBRARY. AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT OMAHA, THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY IS BEING UPDATED AND EXPANDED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF STUDENTS, FACULTY AND THE PUBLIC. THE DEAN OF THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY, STEVE SHORB, EXPLAINS.
SHORB: "Anyone coming into the building can see that students are heavily using the facility. Learning now is about quiet study with books, as it always has been, but even more so it's using the computers and doing active learning projects, meeting with groups. So supporting group study is very important for us."
THE LIBRARY WILL ADD 31,000 SQUARE FEET, A 25 PERCENT INCREASE IN FLOOR SPACE, BY THIS TIME NEXT YEAR. EIGHT GROUP MEETING ROOMS ARE IN THE PLANS. AND TRADITIONAL LIBRARY NEEDS ARE BEING BALANCED WITH 21ST CENTURY RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS.
SHORB: "Our faculty researchers and our students now have to be very sophisticated consumers of information. They need to blend those traditional resources along with the new online resources in order to be sure that they have a comprehensive view of their subject and the very latest scholarship."
IT'S NOT A CASE OF BOOKS VERSUS THE COMPUTER, BUT MEETING THE NEEDS OF ALL TYPES OF LEARNERS AND ALL SORTS OF PATRONS . . . INCLUDING THE PUBLIC.
SHORB: "We have so many different types of users from the community. I'm told that on Saturday's we do a banner business with the clergy preparing their sermons in our library. We have a big crowd on Sunday afternoon where families come in with their children and make use of the juvenile collection that we have."
AND THANKS TO THE LIBRARY'S INTERNET SITE AND INTER-LIBRARY LOAN, CITIZENS FROM ACROSS NEBRASKA HAVE TERRIFIC ACCESS.
SHORB: "We cover all subjects areas that we teach here at UNO and all things that we think our students and faculty would be interested in. And we provide them in a variety of formats."
WHILE THE LIBRARY OFFERS MORE THAN 25,000 ONLINE JOURNALS, HAS A WIDE VARIETY OF ONLINE TEXTS, AND HAS A LARGE STOCK OF DVD AND COMPACT DISCS IN ITS COLLECTION, REAL BOOKS ARE STILL THE CORNERSTONE.
SHORB: "You can take it anywhere, it doesn't need electricity. It's easy to read in a variety of lighting conditions, and many of the materials our students need just are not available yet online."
WANT TO VISIT THE UNO LIBRARY FROM THE COMFORT OF HOME? LOG ON TO LIBRARY.UNOMAHA.EDU. SHORB ENCOURAGES EVERYONE TO EXPLORE THE SITE.
