FOR FOUR DAYS IN AUGUST, NEBRASKA WILL PLAY HOST TO A HUGE GATHERING OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS RESEARCHERS AND PROFESSIONALS.  TWO UNO PROFESSORS HAVE BEEN THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE AMERICAS CONFERENCE ON INFORMATION SYSTEMS 2005 SET TO START AUG. 11.  ILZE ZIGURS, ONE OF THE PROFESSORS, SAYS THE HARD WORK HAS BEEN WORTH IT.

ZIGURS:  "We've got nearly 800 people registered for the conference already.  It's hosted by, or it's one of two major conferences held by, the Association for Information Systems, which is the worldwide association for people who are professors who are teaching information systems and doing research in that area."

ZIGURS IS THE MUTUAL OF OMAHA DISTINGUISHED CHAIR OF INFORMATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.  THE CONFERENCE ATTENDEES ARE FROM, WELL, EVERYWHERE.

ZIGURS: "Probably about 60 percent of them will be from the Americas – North America, South America, Central America.  But the other 40 percent will be from all around the world."

THE TOPICS AT THE CONFERENCE, KNOWN AS AMCIS, ARE EXTREMELY VARIED.

ZIGURS:  "So people will be presenting over 400 papers; over 30 panels, tutorials and workshops.  The topics are things like knowledge management, e-government, healthcare, information systems, leadership, security as we mentioned, cross-cultural issues, project management.  The whole broad range, from technical to behavioral, and social issues related to information systems and information technology."

THE THEME FOR AMCIS 2005 , ZIGURS SAYS, HAS BEEN "A CITY ON A HUMAN SCALE, A CONFERENCE ON A HUMAN SCALE."

ZIGURS:  "One of the things that we're so appreciative of in this community is the community feel, the relationship between our business partners and academia, the ability to really do this outreach to the business community that's so important for Nebraskans, and so important for us, to engage in.  We're very proud that we have a record level of corporate sponsorship for this conference."

MUTUAL OF OMAHA, UNION PACIFIC, THE GREATER OMAHA CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU, AND FIRST NATIONAL BANK ARE ALL INVOLVED.  ZIGURS SAID THE SPONSORS UNDERSTAND HOW IMPORTANT THE EVENT WILL BE TO THE STATE.

ZIGURS:  "People don't know what to expect.  They don't know much about Omaha and so we have a great opportunity here to really showcase what kind of community this is, what a friendly city it is, and how much it has to offer."
