A UNIQUE COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT OMAHA AND THE GALLUP ORGANIZATION CONTINUES TO GROW AND EXPAND. EARLIER THIS YEAR GALLUP ANNOUNCED IT WILL BE CREATING A NEW DATA VISUALIZATION LAB, AND IT WILL NEED MANY MORE UNO STUDENT INTERNS. UNO HAS HAD A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH GALLUP FOR TWO YEARS, EXPLAINS DR. GERALD WAGNER, A DISTINGUISHED RESEARCH FELLOW AT THE PETER KIEWIT INSTITUTE ON UNO'S SOUTH CAMPUS.
WAGNER: "That has worked out remarkably well, in terms of Gallup's satisfaction with what the students have been able to do. And also giving our students a wonderful experience."
WHILE A TRADITIONAL BUSINESS INTERNSHIP MAY GIVE STUDENTS A LIMITED RANGE OF TASKS, GALLUP HAS EMBRACED THE UNO STUDENTS. THEIR EFFORT AND WORK IS TAKEN SERIOUSLY, DR. WAGNER SAYS.
WAGNER: "This is also work that gets turned into real products for real sales at Gallup. And so it's not operating in a support kind of role. It's developing products that Gallup will take to the marketplace."
THE NEW LAB WILL BE READY BY FALL.
WAGNER: "This laboratory has the purpose of working with Gallup clients to find novel, engaging (and) better ways of presenting data to Gallup's customers. The way this will operate is that Gallup customers will come in to Omaha, spend time with our interns--as well as Gallup employees--pursuing ways to better visualize and being better able to understand their data."
THE BUSINESS WORLD HAS EMBRACED VISUALIZATION IN JUST THE PAST FEW YEARS. DR. WAGNER HAS A NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL REPUTATION IN VISUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS. IT'S A FIELD THAT PUTS A PREMIUM ON MAKING FACTS AND FIGURES ENGAGING, UNDERSTANDABLE AND INTERACTIVE.
DR. WAGNER: "Whatever creates a better experience for the end user is what we're after."
GALLUP NAMED DR. WAGNER ONE OF ITS SENIOR SCIENTISTS FOR HIS VISUALIZATION EXPERTISE. THAT TITLE HAS ONLY GONE TO 12 PEOPLE IN ALL OF GALLUP'S WORLDWIDE OPERATIONS.
WAGER: "I get a lot of value in terms of experiences out of this, as well as the students do. In terms of real world applications, it provides that opportunity so we're not working primarily in a theoretical or conceptual or abstract environment. We're working with real people who have real problems that have real needs."
WHAT DO HIS STUDENTS THINK ABOUT THE GALLUP INTERNSHIPS?
WAGNER: "They love it. There's competition to become an intern at Gallup. And it's been operating now for a relatively short period of time, but it's quite well known about. And students want to be on a waiting list to have an opportunity to work there."
