BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR MAY MEAN BEING YOUR OWN BOSS, BUT IT DOESN'T MEAN GOING IT ALONE. AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT OMAHA, THE MAVERICK ENTREPRENEURSHIP INSTITUTE IS EDUCATING THE NEXT GENERATION OF FORWARD THINKING BUSINESS OWNERS. ANNE YORK, A UNO BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION PROFESSOR IS THE DIRECTOR OF THE INSTITUTE.
YORK: "There's a very different profile for entrepreneurial students and we've been trying to tap into that as we recruit students. They tend to be, these students that are interested in this, tend to have maybe had businesses when they were even in high school. Maybe selling t-shirts or roses at the prom."
UNO HAS HAD CLASSES ON ENTREPRENERSHIP FOR 20 YEARS, BUT RECENTLY ADDED NEW COURSES AT THE UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE LEVEL. THE GRADUATE COURSES INCLUDE MANAGEMENT CONSULTING AND ENTREPRENEURIAL PLANNING.
YORK: "And so both of those are very hands on, sort of entrepreneurial sort of courses for our MBAs to take."
ENTREPRENEURS CAN COME FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE, ALL PARTS OF NEBRASKA, YORK SAID.
YORK: "Farmers are great candidates for entrepreneurship. They're very hard working, willing to some risk, and so those are the type of backgrounds you look for when you're looking for entrepreneurial students."
UNO ALSO STARTED A BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION THIS YEAR. A SUMMER COURSE ON ENTREPRENEURSHIP FOR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IS PLANNED, AS WELL. YORK HOPES TO BRING IN HIGH SCHOOLERS IN FROM ACROSS THE STATE NEXT YEAR. TEENS, AND ADULTS, ARE ATTRACTED TO BEING THEIR OWN BOSS FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS.
YORK: "And actually a lot of people want to be responsible for themselves. And, I think, as we see what's happened in corporate America with more downsizing and outsourcing and things like this, people are feeling ‘Well, gosh, my career is going to be risky no matter what I do so I might as well be in charge of it myself.'"
THE COURSES AND BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION BOTH HIGHLIGHT THE NEED FOR ENTREPRENEURS TO PLAN, TO MAKE CONNECTIONS, TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT FOR SUCCESS.
YORK: "If you just have a good idea, it's great. But if you can't show people how it will make money or you can't show people how to execute that idea . . . . If you're asking for money from anybody else and you hope to be successful, you really need to cover all those bases. And so often a team approach is a lot stronger approach, especially in getting your ideas together to go out for money than just a single ‘I'm the ideas' person."
