A NIGHT OF EDUCATION, A NIGHT TO RAISE FUNDS FOR TWO WORTHY CAUSES, AND A NIGHT WHERE WOMEN WILL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO PICK UP A HOCKEY STICK AND SKATE WITH SOME OF THE BEST COLLEGIATE ATHLETES IN THE COUNTRY HAS ALL BEEN ROLLED INTO ONE. THE UNO ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT IS OFFERING HOCKEY 101 TO WOMEN ON FEB. 10. UNO ASSOCIATE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR DEB DENDECK EXPLAINS.
DENBECK: "It's going to be a really fun evening. You'll have the opportunity--after reigistration--to watch the remainder of practice, come in and have dinner with our players, eat a buffet dinner with them. And then along the way you'll be learning all the rules, you'll be seeing all the locker room areas, trying on equipment. You'll actually be on ice, seeing how fast the puck travels, a chance to get pictures taken with players and our coaching staff."
THIS IS A FIRST-TIME EVENT FOR UNO ATHLETICS. PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT THE UNO WOMEN'S WALK (WHICH ASSISTS WOMEN'S ATHLETICS) AND LIZ'S LEGACY (WHICH SUPPORTS BREAST CANCER RESEARCH.) PARTICIPANTS WILL ALSO GET HOCKEY TICKETS TO SEE UNO TAKE ON MICHIGAN.
DENBECK: "Well, I think one of the things that's really great about hockey is that it's very fast-paced. There's a lot of action, it's going on on a continuous basis. In football there's a lot of down time between downs and time outs and everything. You know, hockey is pretty much every period is pretty fast paced and pretty ongoing."
HOCKEY IS FUN TO WATCH EVEN FOR A NOVICE, DENBECK SAID. AFTER HOCKEY 101, ATTENDEES WILL MORE FULLY UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY'RE WATCHING.
DENBECK: "I think it does take some time to really understand it, so we think this is a great concept, and I think in the future you'll see us start to offer more Hockey 101 for kids because we've had a great interest from mothers wanting to know if kids can come. And also we've had a lot of guys who would like to do this too."
AND COLLEGE HOCKEY IS DIFFERENT WHEN COMPARED TO PROFESSIONAL HOCKEY.
DENBECK: "I think you can really see the game develop in the college game because there is a great deal of passing. The strategy is a little bit different. It's fast paced and it's very physical, but there isn't the abusive fighting. It's really a fun family atmosphere."
THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT HAS ALSO PUT TOGETHER A SPECIAL RATE AT A NEARBY COURTYARD BY MARRIOTT SO WOMEN FROM BEYOND THE METROPOLITAN AREA CAN TAKE PART.
DENBECK: "You don't just need to live in the Omaha area to come to Hockey 101."
THE COST TO ATTEND HOCKEY 101 IS $50. REGISTRATION ENDS ON FEB.2 FOR MORE DETAILS AND MORE INFORMATION, CALL (402) 554-3422. SPACE IS LIMITED.
