Did you know one of UNO's strategic priorities is community engagement? Every year since its inception, UNO has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll -- the highest honor for engagement by the Federal government. This places UNO among the top universities in the nation for service learning, community service, and civic engagement initiatives. In addition, UNO has achieved the prestigious elective classification for "Community Engagement" by the Carnegie Foundation for excellence in collaboration with the Omaha metro area.
There are many ways to give back to the community while attending UNO.
The Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center
The Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center (CEC), which officially opened in April 2014, is the new home to campus-wide engagement programs like the Service Learning Academy, the Collaborative, as well as initiatives founded by indivual faculty, students, organizations or community partners. The CEC also offers space for community and campus meetings, workshops, and special events.
Service Learning Academy
The Service Learning Academy works in collaboration with nonprofit community organizations, governmental agencies, and P-12 faculty. Projects are implemented that serve the community and create valuable learning experiences for UNO students. Every semester, there are a variety of courses at UNO that incorporate service learning. Students like you are given the opportunity to apply classroom curriculum to actual community needs. The opportunities provide a means of learning about the surrounding community and the organizations that serve those in need and take on important issues within the community. The Service Learning Academy is on the second floor of the CEC.
Housed in the CEC, the Collaborative is a new student-led program developed to serve as the primary structure for organizing and coordinating university-wide community service and volunteering opportunities. The Collaborative can be found on the first floor of the CEC.
The Office of Civic and Social Responsibility
The Office of Civic and Social Responsibility (CSR) manages UNO's signature service days, which include Seven Days of Service, held over spring break; Three Days of Service, held over fall break; Global Youth Service Day, held in April; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day; 9-11 Remembrance Day; and Veterans Day of Service. The CSR can also help you find other ways to volunteer in the community. CSR is located inside the Collaborative on the first floor of the CEC.
Giving Back to Those on Campus: The Maverick Food Pantry
Located on the first floor of UNO's new Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center (CEC), the Maverick Food Pantry serves all currently enrolled UNO students as well as faculty and staff. The Food Pantry collaborates with services and departments across campus to support the UNO Community’s growth in all 8 Dimensions of Wellness.
The mission of UNO’s Maverick Food Pantry is to contribute to UNO’s culture of caring by providing food to those in immediate need and connecting them with resources in the greater Omaha area for long-term support. We are dedicated to eliminating hunger in the UNO community and increasing awareness of food insecurity and nutrition. To date, the Maverick Food Pantry has distributed more than 7,000 pounds of food to UNO students and staff in need.
