OMAHA – More University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) students, staff and faculty are taking advantage of sustainable transportation options.
Members of the UNO community can explore those options at an upcoming Transportation Showcase.
The showcase will take place outside the Health, Physical Education & Recreation building (HPER) from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25. Attendees can ask questions about MavRide, Heartland B-Cycle and UNO Parking’s new ridesharing program.
An Omaha Metro Transit bus will be parked on campus, allowing MavRide participants to get familiar with a bus before their first ride.
Since January, all active student, staff and faculty members' MavCARDs have also functioned as bus passes with no special activation required. The card is valid any time buses are running, including weekends and the gaps between semesters. Students are considered active if they are currently taking classes or registered for the upcoming semester.
This year’s MavRide usage is up 37 percent from the same time period last year. From Jan. 1 – July 31 of this year, Metro provided nearly 55,000 rides to UNO students, staff and faculty. That’s up from roughly 40,000 rides over the same time period in 2015.
Look for numbers on a new ridesharing program to jump in a big way over the next year. Launched this fall by Parking Services, the program aims to connect drivers and passengers who would like to carpool. Interested students, staff and faculty can fill out this ride matching form on MavSYNC to get started.
Finally, bicycling to campus with a personal bike or through the B-Cycle bike sharing program remains popular.
