OMAHA – “Having the ability to travel to London was, and will be, one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” writes UNO student Kali Hast, one of ten UNO students who participated in the London Theatre Live! program.
Taught and coordinated by Professor D. Scott Glasser, the study abroad program saw students in London this past summer, where they lived and learned for two eventful weeks. During their time there, students had the opportunity to attend numerous performances, participate in workshops and seminars, meet with theatre professionals in the field, and visit and tour locations both in and out of London.
Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the National Theatre, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Cambridge, Warwick Castle – these are just a few of the locations where students put their learning into action. Among the highlights for students was a trip to the Warner Brother Studio: The Making of Harry Potter, where the real magic of the Harry Potter films came to life in the creation of sets, costumes, and props. Students also loved how many opportunities they had to see live theatre – more than six individual performances!
The time abroad was preceded by a semester of coursework studying the history and appreciation of British theatre with an emphasis on historical, political and social cultural context. The active engagement of study abroad facilitated discussions surrounding not only theatre but also cultural exchange, globalism, and the history of empire.
“In addition to making manifest global differences and similarities, the power of this learning experience for theatre students lies in the intense immersion in complex professional theatre in one of the most international cities in the world,” Glasser explains. “The grounding taught in class and production expands by example in this particular, professional, yet popular, theatre industry. Meeting with theatre workers who are employed full time, constantly expanding their skills and creating through high-stakes risks inspires and empowers students beyond expectations.”
This faculty-led program, while focused for theatre students, is open to a variety of student backgrounds and has no prerequisites aside from interest and the motivation to engage with content.
After a very successful first run, the program is intended to run again next summer 2017.
