From midnight to midnight, join others in supporting local nonprofits in Omaha through Omaha Gives!, an online giving event that brings donors together to support the work of organizations throughout the Omaha community.
Through Omaha Gives! the Maverick Food Pantry joins 570 other nonprofits serving Douglas, Sarpy and Pottawatamie counties participating in Omaha’s second annual charitable challenge. Donors have the opportunity to make gifts of $10 or more to support their favorite nonprofits. And participating organizations will compete for prizes given to those ranking in the top 10 of dollars raised and participation. Every gift will earn a percentage-based match from the Omaha Community Foundation.
Food insecurity is becoming more evident on college campuses, and UNO is no exception. In 2013, UNO created the Maverick Food Pantry which provides nutritionally balanced food assistance packages to current members of the UNO community who are in need. The pantry runs entirely on monetary and non-perishable donations.
To date, the pantry has received more than 400 requests and distributed more than 6,500 pounds of donated food.
The mission of the Maverick Food Pantry is to contribute to UNO’s culture of caring by providing food to those in immediate need at UNO and connecting them with resources in the greater Omaha area for long-term assistance. The food pantry also collaborates with services and departments across campus to support the UNO Community’s growth in all 8 Dimensions of Wellness.
Glacier Creek Preserve is a significant resource for eastern Nebraska with a mission focusing on research and education in the sciences while also serving as an important multi-disciplinary, university- and community-wide resource for diverse activities including those in the arts and humanities. Management of the preserve is designed to maintain the landscape-level prairie ecosystem which serves as the common thread among preserve activities.
