What Technology is Used for Omaha Neighborhood Scan?

Omaha Neighborhood Scan relies on several technology components.

  • First, neighborhood residents use Pocket PCs (PPC) to record information about neighborhood conditions. The PPC contains all training and instructional information so that neighborhood residents have everything they need to support their work while in the field.
  • Second, easy-to-use software is loaded on each PPC. The software is customized for each project and provides an automated form for collecting scan information.
  • Third, digital cameras are used to record photos of neighborhood conditions. Photographic images are linked to scan data records. This provides a visual image of conditions for “before” and “after” comparisons.

What Services Can Omaha Neighborhood Scan Provide?

  • Setting Your Agenda. Staff will work with your association to think through the issues you are concerned about and how they might be documented and addressed via Omaha Neighborhood Scan. Once you have established the issue(s) you want to focus on, ONS will help you begin the process.
  • Team Development. Omaha Neighborhood Scan staff will assist in thinking through the number of people needed to conduct your neighborhood scan, the exact protocol to use, and the frequency of scan needed.
  • Hardware and Software. Pocket PCs, digital cameras, a laptop computer, and easy-to-use software will be made available to your neighborhood association during the scan process. All documentation of conditions is done via customized data entry forms on the Pocket PCs. Photos are made using the digital cameras. Data collected using the PPCs is synchronized using a laptop computer.
  • Training. ONS staff will assist you in using all hardware and software. Easy-to-read manuals explain the equipment and its use. A Pocket PC classroom is also available on the UNO campus for groups desiring to have more in-depth classroom training prior to field work. A code enforcement manual teaches residents about housing problems.
  • Analysis Assistance. Documentation of neighborhood conditions is quite easy and fast with the PPCs and software provided by ONS. Once you have forwarded your final data to scan staff, you will be provided a summary of data and findings. In addition, staff will work with you to bring in additional useful data, including census and other information.
  • Meeting Facilitation. Conducting your neighborhood scan is just the beginning. It is equally important to follow through with discussion and review of actions to address issues identified through the scan. Omaha Neighborhood Scan staff will be available to help organize and facilitate meetings to accomplish your goals.

What is the Process My Neighborhood Will Follow?

Each project is customized for the neighborhood association. Generally, you can expect to work through a process paralleling the services identified above.
