Monthly Report for September
The past couple of months have
been a process of reviving the chapter here at the University of
Nebraska at Omaha. The last couple of years our chapter has been
dormant. We had a student, Chris Smith, who was involved with the
chapter in 2002 and decided to revive the organization on campus. I have
taken the reigns over as president. When I accepted the opportunity, I
did realize the scope of work that was ahead of me. I started in the
middle of July attempting to recruit members and researching our roles
as members of NBS. We have had two meetings with a decent turnout, with
eight members who are serious and five to ten who are interested, but
just need some more persuading.
Our communication program changed from being a college to its own school
this year. Integrated in one school as The School of Communication,
Fine Arts, and Media, the college includes our television station
(KYNE-TV) and our classical radio station (KVNO-FM). The faculty and
students view the new college with many aspirations. This goes to show
how much the communication field is growing and getting the recognition
that it deserves. I believe it is an ideal time for the NBS to take off
on our campus. With the increasing importance rising, the NBS will soon
be flourishing.
Until then, we have been taking steps to get the organization in full
swing. We had a booth set up at our Student Organization Fair and
received names of students who show some interest. Our biggest
recruitment goal is to get underclassmen involved with the chapter. As
of right now, most of our members are seniors who will be graduating
this semester or by next May. We are planning on going to some
broadcasting, journalism and other communication classes to get freshmen
and sophomores enrolled. We could have an extremely productive year, but
if we do not have anyone below us to take over, then we will not be able
to go any further.
We are also planning to attend our regional conference next month and
are doing a fundraiser right now to help us get there. We just started a
raffle yesterday and hope to get enough money together to cover the
costs of a van rental and our hotel fees. We have several great prizes
we are raffling and $1.00 of every $5.00 ticket we sell goes to the
Katrina Hurricane Relief Fund. We hope to contribute to the survivors of
Hurricane Katrina and help ourselves get to Minnesota at the same time.
So far, we are meeting our goals. This leads me to believe that we have
the capability to raise enough for Minnesota and maybe even the National
Convention.
We have several goals set such as, recruiting new student and
professional members, visiting broadcasting facilities, having guest
speakers, conducting social events, community service work, completing
student projects together, and improving our website. We have a long
road ahead of us, but I believe if we do most of the paving, then the
future student members will have a smoother ride. With our hard work,
future members will be able to be an even more productive chapter.
Thank You,
Renee Harvey, President
