Undergraduate music degrees are offered in music education and music performance. Students may choose to study with talented artist-faculty in brass, woodwind, percussion, strings, keyboard, or voice. The Bachelor of Music degree in performance may be completed with composition or music technology as a major as well. The Bachelor of Music degree in education leads to certification in K-12 instrumental and vocal music.
Music education is a major emphasis of the Department of Music. A comprehensive curriculum leading toward a K-12 teaching certificate is offered to students in all areas of music study. A unique team-taught emphasis provides students with a diversity of hands-on teaching experiences, techniques, and resources required for a successful career. Nationally recognized clinicians and educators regularly conduct clinics and workshops throughout the year offering advanced experiences in a broad spectrum of teaching situations. The newly constructed Music Technology Laboratory offers students hands-on experience with the latest technology in music education. A nationally recognized and award winning collegiate chapter of the Music Educators National Conference provides students additional exposure to national leaders and issues related to music education.
The Bachelor of Music degree in performance involves intensive study in vocal or instrumental music and experience in a variety of performance situations. An innovative curriculum in fundamental music skills provides a solid foundation in music theory, history and analysis. Students will study with talented artist-faculty in brass, woodwinds, percussion, keyboard, or voice and will focus on the skills needed to lay a foundation for a performance career and graduate study. There are three different concentrations available in the Music Performance degree. In addition to the performance oriented Instrumental or Vocal Performance Concentration, there are Concentrations in Theory and Composition, and Music Technology. The Concentration in Theory and Composition provides extensive theoretical and creative work in composition and lays a foundation for graduate study. The Music Technology Concentration combines the rigorous training of a traditional university music program with a practical hands-on audio curriculum featuring studies in digital recording, synthesis, and other music technology.
