Metropolitan Area Youth Jazz Orchestra (MAYJO)
Sponsored by the University of Nebraska at Omaha
This is MAYJO’s seventh year as the premier high school honors jazz ensemble in the midwest. An audition only group, MAYJO is made up of the finest high school music students in the Omaha/Council Bluffs metropolitan area. MAYJO rehearses twice weekly on the UNO campus and performs several concerts each semester on campus and in the community.
MAYJO is directed by UNO's coordinator of jazz studies, Dr. Pete Madsen assisted by UNO music faculty, students, and UNO artist-in-residence drummer Carlos Figueroa.
MAYJO has been invited to perform as a guest ensemble at multiple jazz festivals in Nebraska and Iowa, including the Great Plains Jazz Festival in Omaha and the Bluffs Jazz Festival in Council Bluffs. Guest artists that have performed with MAYJO include Jim Pugh, Mike Vax, and Marvin Stamm. MAYJO has also had the opportunity to work with many guest clinicians including Jim Widner, members of the Jim Widner Big Band, members of the Mike Vax Big Band, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
