Welcome to the Department of Music
UNO is located in the heart of Nebraska's largest city, and we're proud to serve as the state's metropolitan university. The Department of Music at UNO offers challenging and comprehensive music study in a learning environment that features the best of both worlds—a small-school atmosphere within a thriving city where internship, employment and entertainment opportunities are plentiful.
The Department of Music is one of five academic units within the College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media. It is located in the beautifully landscaped Janet A. and Willis S. Strauss Performing Arts Center, which is next to the focal point of campus, a campanile that houses a carillon of forty-seven bells. The Strauss Performing Arts Center has a tunable recital hall which seats 460, impressive acoustic isolation, and well-equipped classrooms and rehearsal spaces. The Strauss PAC serves as a center of musical activity on the UNO campus and in the Omaha community.
The Department of Music has a faculty of 50 full and part time members and is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). The Department enrolls nearly 200 undergraduate and graduate students each year. Degrees offered include the Bachelor of Music degree with concentrations in composition, music education, technology and performance and the Master of Music degree with concentrations in conducting, music education, and performance.
Undergraduate degrees are offered in both music education and music performance. Students will study with talented artist-faculty in brass, woodwind, percussion, string, keyboard, or voice. The Bachelor of Music in performance degree may be completed with a concentration in performance, theory and composition, or music technology, and includes professional music courses as well as ample opportunities to perform as a soloist, in small chamber ensembles and in a variety of other large and small performance ensembles. Our undergraduates in both performance and education have the opportunity to participate in all of our top performance ensembles. All of our major ensembles are conducted by our full time faculty members who have sterling credentials in their area. The Bachelor of Music degree in education leads to certification in K-12 in both instrumental and vocal music teaching.
