Congratulations to graduate flute major Sara Schuhardt who was accepted by taped audition to perform in a master class for George Pope during the Oklahoma Flute Festival in Oklahoma City! The event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008. The event is sponsored by the Flute Society of St. Louis and will take place on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008. FLUTE STUDIO RECITALS Flute students at UNO learn a variety of works during their course of study, encompassing almost every style and genre in the flute repertoire. Each fall, students perform a work they have studied that semester in a formal studio recital. In the spring semester, the annual "Piccolopalooza" concert is held on which students perform works studied on piccolo. For news about current UNO flute students, check out the FLUTE EVENTS link! DR. BEARD'S PRIVATE FLUTE STUDIO Dr. Beard accepts high school and middle school students for private study by audition. She also accepts adult students at all levels (no audition required). Her rates for 2008-2009 are $40/hour lesson or $30/30 minute lesson. Limited spots are available, and the studio fills up quickly. For more information, contact her at (402) 554-2685 or email cbeard@mail.unomaha.edu UNO Flute Studio ALUMNI..."THEN and NOW" Taurice Alexander graduated from UNO in 2008 with her Bachelor of Music degree in education. A native of Sioux City, IA, she was a member of the Heartland Philharmonic Orchetsra, Symhonic Wind Ensemble, Heartland Community Flute Choir, Marching Band (section leader), and BF3 Flute Trio. Taurice will start her new position as Director of Bands at Homer HS beginning in the fall of 2008. Anna Hall graduated from UNO in 2008 with her Bachelor of Music degree in education. Anna played in several ensembles at UNO, including the Symphonic Wind Ensemble (principal), Marching Band, Heartland Philharmonic Orchestra (principal), the UNO Woodwind Quartet, BF3 Flute Trio, and Heartland Community Flute Choir. Anna will attend graduate school to pursue a MM in flute performance at the University of Iowa in the fall 2008, where she received a graduate research fellowship. Carolyn Weston graduated from UNO with her Bachelor's degree in Music Education in December 2007. Originally from from Junietta, NE, she is now the assistant director of bands at Auburn HS/JH. Carolyn plays in the Heartland Community Flute Choir and has performed in master classes for Hannah Lang and Joe Bonner. Cindy Bassett McGann is a 2004 graduate of UNO where she was awarded a Master of Music degree in flute performance. While at UNO, she played principal flute in the Heartland Philharmonic Orchestra, 2nd flute/piccolo for the Lincoln Symphony, substitute flute/piccolo for the Omaha Symphony, and served as Assistant Director of the Heartland Community Flute Choir. She also held the Music Theory Teaching Assistantship at UNO from 2003-2004. Her many accomplishments include acceptance to the Julius Baker Summer Masterclass in 2003 and winning the UNO Concerto Competition in 2004. A mother of 5 and grandmother of 4, Cindy also holds a Juris Doctorate from Creighton University. Carmen Campbell is a 2003 graduate of UNO with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. She works in the Omaha Public School District teaching elementary music, and continues to perform as a member of the Heartland Community Flute Choir. In the summer of 2004, Carmen began graduate work in Music Education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Sarah Aschenbrenner is a 2003 graduate of UNO with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and is now employed in Nebraska teaching middle school band/music in a private school district. She also plays principal flute in the Nebraska Wind Symphony. Tina Stevens is a 2003 graduate of UNO with Bachelor of Music Education degree. A mother of 2 small children, she is currently employed in Nebraska teaching middle school/elementary music. Kris Stubbe is a 2003 graduate of UNO with Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance. After graduation, she continued her education at UNO as a Masters degree student in Business which she completed in 2004. Leslie McQueen is a 2003 graduate of UNO with a Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance. After graduation, she moved to Florida with her husband where he is pursuing a Masters degree in piano. Zachary Fowler ('Zac') ia a December 2003 graduate of UNO, Zac holds degrees in Computer Science and Spanish. While a student, Zac played flute during concert season and trumpet during marching season. He is currently employed by UNO. Kristi Enyart Stanichar is a 2002 Graduate of UNO with a Master of Music degree in woodwind performance. Tina M. Shogrin (formerly Tina Tassone) is a 1991 graduate of UNO with a Bachelor of Music Education Degree. Since graduating, Tina continued working at the Strategic Air & Space Museum while teaching private flute and piano students in her spare time. Since becoming a mom in 2004, Tina has left the Museum to work for the Omaha Performing Arts Society and is attempting to repopulate her flute studio. Tina has been performing with the Omaha Municipal Orchestra for the last five years and continues to do free lance work in and around the Omaha area. Betsy Kallstrom is a 1975 Graduate of UNO with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. She worked as a band director at Bennington Public Schools for 15 years, but now maintains a private flute studio and stays active in the music community as an adjudicator and clinician. She performs with the Nebraska Wind Symphony, the Blair Area Community Band, and the Heartland Community Flute Choir. Betsy serves as Director of the Chancel Ringers Handbell Choir at St. Luke UMC where she also sings in the choir.
