Peggy Holloway

Dr. Peggy Holloway has enjoyed a long career as a scholar, educator, and performing artist. She holds undergraduate degrees in French and Music, both summa cum laude, and was the first graduate to earn a Masters in Music from the University of Nebraska at Omaha where she served as a graduate assistant in music theory. Before pursuing her doctoral studies, she performed in over 50 productions in music theatre and operetta, including several years in professional dinner theatre productions, and was a member of the Opera Omaha chorus for seven seasons. Principal roles included Nellie Forbush in South Pacific, Luisa in The Fantasticks, and the lead ingénue roles in most of the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire. She has also been a teaching artist for the Opera Omaha "Opera in the Schools" program and for the Nebraska Arts Council.

Holloway earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Voice Performance. She served as Graduate Teaching Assistant in Voice and performed with the UNL Opera, performing the principal roles of Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream opposite internationally renowned counter-tenor David Daniels, and the title role in La Divina. Post-graduate study included participation in the prestigious NATS Internship Program and study with Master Teachers Shirley Emmons, Richard Miller, and Thomas Houser. Since earning her DMA, Dr. Holloway has devoted her career to teaching and scholarly research. She has served on the voice faculties of Peru State College, Wayne State College, Dana College, where she was a tenured Associate Professor before the college's untimely closing in 2010, and Midland University. She also served for five years as the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs for the Hixon-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts at UNL.

Dr. Holloway's major research areas are vocal art music by women composers and contemporary American composers. She has performed lecture recitals across the country and internationally, including performances in Vienna, Limerick (Ireland), Quebec City, Portland, San Francisco, Boulder, Denver, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Atlanta, and Richmond. Dr. Holloway is considered the leading authority on the art songs of Marion Bauer and contributed the chapter on Bauer to Volume VII of Women Composers: Music Through the Ages. She also edited the publication Six Songs by Marion Bauer and recorded a CD entitled Send Me a Dream, the Songs of Marion Bauer. As a specialist in performances of New Music, Dr. Holloway has also presented the world premiere of song cycles by contemporary composers Randall Snyder, Thomas Ediger, and Darleen Mitchell. In addition to her research and performance activities, Dr. Holloway has been an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the College Music Society. She has served as treasurer and president of the Great Plains Chapter of CMS and has organized the Regional Conferences for several years. Dr. Holloway has also appeared as a concert soloist with many ensembles, including the Nebraska Choral Arts Society, The Voices of Omaha, The Clarion Chorale, The UNL Choirs, The Dana Chorale (European Concert Tour), the UNO Chamber Orchestra and Madrigali et al. Representative repertoire includes the Faure Requiem, Handel Messiah and Israel in Egypt, Haydn The Creation, Mozart Requiem, Vivaldi Gloria and Pergolesi Stabat Mater.

In addition to her position at UNO, where she teaches Applied Voice, Class Voice, and Diction for Singers, Dr. Holloway teaches at Iowa Western Community College and The Concordia High School of Music, and maintains a private studio. She is music director at St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church. Dr. Holloway is currently researching the effects of diet and exercise on voice performance. An avid cyclist, she is a member of the UNO National Biking Challenge team and has enjoyed holding second place on the mileage leaderboard for the past season.
