The Department of Music offers an extensive vocal and choral program, suitable for training vocal musicians who wish to become music educators or who wish to pursue advanced degrees in performance or conducting. All voice majors study privately with an artist faculty member specializing in voice and each student has the opportunity to sing before the vocal faculty and their peers several times each semester. This performance experience combined with the rigorous music curriculum prepares students for teaching or further graduate study in music.
During students' time at UNO, they have the opportunity to perform major works with various UNO instrumental ensembles, as well as invited performances with the Omaha Symphony. In addition, every two years, the choral program has an international concert tour. The tour destinations have included Germany, Belgium, Mexico, The Netherlands, Lithuania, and Russia. During many of these tours, visits to UNO's sister universities and Omaha's sister cities are a highlight of the trip and the choir performs at many historic and famous venues.
UNO has several choral ensembles and each has two or more performances each semester. Students are also provided the opportunity to assist with and plan annual invited festivals. These include the All-State Help Sessions, Honor Choir Festivals, and the Annual Show Choir Festival. For Music Education majors, this provides valuable experience in the administrative side in running a music program.
