The Salvation Army honored UNO student Amanda Steele with a D.J.'s Hero award May 5 during its annual luncheon.
Steele, an aviation student, left a dysfunctional family situation and became homeless before her freshman year in high school. She worked to support herself. Through hard work and good life choices, she overcame hardships to become a top student. Last spring she received an Outstanding Leadership Award from her alma mater, Wylie High School in Texas.
The annual award honors local youths ages 17 through 19 and includes a $5,000 scholarship. The D.J.'s Hero awards are named in memory of D.J. Sokol, son of David and Peggy Sokol, who lost his battle with cancer at age 18.
