With Microsoft® Lync communications software, you can communicate and collaborate easily with faculty and staff in different locations or time. Have a question for a contact in another department? View their “presence” and send a quick IM. Microsoft Lync is more than just an instant messaging client. It offers a host of features to make it easy to communicate and collaborate from anywhere with just about anyone at UNO.

Lync seamlessly integrates with your e-mail and calendar, and offers an easy-to-use platform for:

  • Instant messaging (IM) - Send quick messages to an individual or group
  • Presence - Show or view availability based on your calendar or IM status; integrates with Outlook and Microsoft Office suite
  • Mobile - Set your status, send IMs, or view contacts with the Lync app on your smartphone or tablet

How can I turn Lync off?

From the Status drop-down, select Exit.

  1. Click Show Menu drop down next to Options
  2. Click File
  3. Click Exit
How can I stop Lync from automatically starting when I turn on my computer?
  1. Click the Options icon
  2. Select Personal from the menu
  3. Deselect the Automatically Start Lync When I Log On To Windows checkbox.
  4. Click OK
How can I stop Lync from showing up in my task bar when I close it?
  1. Click the Options icon
  2. Select the Minimize to the Notifications Area Instead of the Task Bar checkbox
  3. Click OK
Can I turn off notifications when people add me to their contacts?
  1. Click the Options icon
  2. Select Alerts from the menu
  3. Deselect the Notify Me When Someone Adds Me to His or Her Contact List checkbox.
  4. Click OK
Can I use Lync to instant message with students?

No. At this time Google Talk which students use and Microsoft Lync cannot integrate. However, you can use your Google Apps account to communicate with students using your own Google Talk account.

Can I use Lync to instant message with faculty and staff from other University of Nebraska campuses?

Soon. Once the other campuses have implemented Lync, UNO will be able to instant message with them. There is not a set timeline at this time.
