Valerie J. Hoffman

Valerie J. Hoffman, associate professor of religion at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, received a B. A. in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1975 and a Ph. D. in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the University of Chicago in 1986.

She is the author of Sufism, Mystics, and Saints in Modern Egypt (Columbia, SC: University of South Carolina Press, 1995) and numerous articles on Sufism, Muslim women's religious lives, Islamic gender ideology, and contemporary Islamic movements.
