Lead

There are two major sources of lead: Soil and Lead-based Paint. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has declared an area in Omaha that is east of 45th Street and between Ames and "L" Street as a Superfund Site. Some yards in the area have lead in the soil. The EPA is performing tests to determine which ones contain lead and has found higher lead levels in yards east of 45th Street.

Why Worry About Lead?

It is important to keep children away from lead. Small children who are ages 1-6 years of age are more likely to get lead poisoning due to the fact that they put things in their mouths. Lead poisoning can affect a child's brain and cause learning disorders, attention deficit problems and other health problems.

Keep them away from the danger by covering bare spots in the yard with sod, rocks or mulch. Wash hands and toys after playing outside. Keep them away from chipped or peeling paint at home.

Please call the Douglas County Health Department, 444-7146, for more information regarding paint hazards, or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund, 1-800-223-0425 for soil testing and results of soil testing in Superfund area.
