Ruth and Phil Sokolof Lecture Series: Featuring Guest Speaker Daniel Gordis

The Natan and Hannah Schwalb Center for Israel and Jewish Studies at the University of Nebraska Omaha is pleased to announce Daniel Gordis as the featured speaker at their Annual Phil and Ruth Sokolof Lecture series event. 

Gordis, President of the Shalem Foundation and a Senior Fellow at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem, will present at the UNO’s Thompson Alumni Center on Wednesday, November 16th, 2011 at 7.30 p.m.  The event, sponsored by the Schwalb Center and funded by the Phil and Ruth Sokolof Endowment, is now in its third year and is free of charge and open to the general public. 

His presentation, “The Year 2048: Can Israel Survive to the Age of 100?” will draw on his expertise on Israel, and print and book writings, to provide an in-depth analysis on how past Israeli history and conflict can shape the future prospects of the country and Jews, and prepare people to overcome critical issues which will arise in the future, threatening the survival of the nation. 

Dr. Gordis is widely cited on matters relating to Israel, and has written and lectured throughout the world on Israeli society and difficulties facing the Jewish State.  He is a regular columnist for the Jerusalem Post, and his writings have appeared in a wide array of magazines and newspapers including the New York Times, the New Republic, the New York Times Magazine, Moment, Tikkun, Azure, Commentary Magazine, Foreign Affairs and Conservative Judaism.  As well as being a frequent contributor to these publications he is also the author of numerous books, including Saving Israel: How the Jewish People Can Win a War That May Never End which was published 2009, and awarded the 2009 National Jewish Book Award.

Gary Javitch, board member of the Schwalb Center for Israel and Jewish Studies, having both heard Dr. Gordis speak in the past and read one of his books, considers Dr. Gordis a great “get” for the Sokolof Lecture Series and for the Jewish Community of Omaha. 
Dr. Gordis was the founding dean of the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at the University of Judaism, the first rabbinical college on the West Coast of the United States.  Dr. Gordis joined Shalem in 2007 to help found Israel’s first liberal arts college, after spending nine years as vice president of the Mandel Foundation in Israel and director of its Leadership Institute.
