Islamic Studies


Given the importance of Islam in world politics and the global economy, our minor program offers the students the opportunity to acquire expertise in Islam and the Muslim world. Such expertise is beneficial for those students who plan to pursue a career in business, education, history, anthropology, international studies, religious studies, communication, political science, social work, public administration, art and art history, medicine, criminal justice, sociology and other fields. A minor in Islamic Studies requires a total of eighteen (18) hours with a minimum of 12 hours at 3000 level or above.

Required courses for a minor in Islamic Studies are as follows:

  • Islam (RELI 3200)
  • The Modern Middle East (HIST 2190)
  • Middle East Politics (PSCI 3700)

Nine (9) additional hours for a minor in Islamic Studies must be taken from among the following courses or other courses approved by the Director of Islamic Studies Program:

  • Women in Islam (RELI 4400)
  • Muslims in America (RELI 4420)
  • Islam and Politics (PSCI 4620)
  • International Relations of the Middle East (PSCI 4210)
  • The U.S. and the Middle East (HIST 4800)
  • Israel and Palestine (HIST 4730)
  • Sufism (RELI 3500)
  • Arabic (FLNG 1110/1120)
