Founded in 1948, American Humanics is a national alliance of colleges, universities and nonprofit organizations devoted to preparing college students for careers in nonprofit youth and human service organizations. The University of Nebraska at Omaha is one of over 75 campus affiliates offering the American Humanics certificate in youth and human services nonprofit management. The term, "humanics," emphasizes the integration of "spirit, mind & body" in service to others.
The American Humanics Program's fall retreat was recently featured in the Fall 2007 newsletter of the Nebraska chapter of the American Society for Public Administration.
UNO American Humanics students Shelby Buettner and Jamie Gibson were recently slelected by the national American Humanics organization for the Next Generation Nonprofit Leaders Program (NextGen). As awardees of this prestigious program funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, they will receive $4,500 stipends as they complete their internship experiences during the Spring 2008 semester.
Students in PA 4500 Nonprofit Fundraising recently completed another semester of successful service-learning projects. A photo gallery of their presentations is available.
If you are interested in making a difference, a career in youth and human services may be for you. As a professional in the nonprofit world you can reap the rewards of being of service to others and making the world a better place. You will teach people new skills and help an individual or an entire community solve problems. You will help today’s youth by providing friendship and strong leadership. You can make a difference!
More than 25 million people are served by the national nonprofit partner agencies that primarily support American Humanics. Behind the scenes are more than 30,000 full-time professional staff members. In youth and human service agencies, the demand far exceeds the number of candidates for entry-level positions. Each year these agencies need nearly 3,000 new professionals to fill staff vacancies. American Humanics finds, educates, and places young people in these rewarding careers. With certification by American Humanics you will be better qualified to seek professional employment opportunities in youth and human service agencies.
At UNO, the American Humanics program works closely with a local Community Council made up of representatives from local nonprofit organizations, UNO and others in the community.
