DEPARTMENT
OF HISTORY
RPT Guidelines
REVISED
"Reappointment, Promotion,
and Tenure" (RPT) procedures & standards for tenure-track faculty
members in the UNO Department of History" (Adopted by the
faculty
of the UNO Department of History at their departmental meeting on the
afternoon
of Nov. 17, 2005).
1. All
tenure-track
faculty members in the UNO Department of History who are being
considered
for reappointment, promotion, or tenure must complete "the
Reappointment,
Promotion, and Tenure Form" (hereinafter "RPT Form") of
the University of Nebraska at Omaha and submit that form along with all
required supporting documents by the annual deadline established by
UNO's
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. In every respect,
the
"RPT procedures and standards" for tenure-track faculty members
in the UNO Department of History conform to the requirements of the
current
Contract between the UNO Chapter of the AAUP and the Board of Regents
of
the University of Nebraska.
2. Every newly appointed
tenure-track faculty member of the UNO Department of History will be
assigned
a mentor from among the tenured faculty members of the Department.
Every mentor will periodically meet with the assigned mentoree to
provide
needed and requested advice and encouragement.
3. Each newly appointed
tenure-track faculty member in the Department of History will receive
from
the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences an initial letter of
appointment
which will specify the number of years of service required for
that
faculty member to become eligible for consideration for tenure at UNO.
The number of such years will normally not be less than three and
never more than six. Newly appointed faculty members who have
had
several years of full-time teaching experience at other colleges or
universities
and who have published several scholarly articles or a book may
negotiate
with the chairperson of the Department of History and with the Dean of
the College of Arts & Sciences in order to be considered for tenure
at UNO after the third or fourth or fifth year of tenure-track service.
4. Annually, every
tenure-track
faculty member being considered for reappointment and/or
promotion
and/or tenure will be first evaluated by all tenured and tenure-track
faculty
members of the Department of History acting together as "the
Departmental
Advisory Committee." In each case, the mentor of the
tenure-track
faculty member being evaluated will serve as the chairperson of that
member's
"Departmental Advisory Committee" and will prepare the written
evaluation to accompany the RPT Form submitted by this tenure-track
faculty
member. This procedure applies in every instance with the
exception of a tenure-track faculty member's reappointment to a second
year of employment at UNO as described in item 7. below.
5. Those members of the
Department
of History who are eligible to vote in decisions regarding
reappointment,
promotion and tenure are all tenured and tenure-track faculty and also
faculty on phased retirement.
6. The chairperson of the
Department of History is obliged to write an independent evaluation of
every tenure-track faculty member being considered for reappointment,
promotion,
and tenure. The chairperson will in each case endorse the
rankings of "the Departmental Advisory Committee" but will write
an independent narrative report.
7. To be eligible for
consideration
for reappointment for a second academic year of service at UNO, a
tenure-track
faculty member in the Department of History must have demonstrated
competence
in teaching, research, and service. In this instance,
reappointment
may be accomplished by means of a positive letter of recommendation
from
the chairperson of the Department of History to the Dean of the College
of Arts & Sciences. It is understood that the chairperson
will
write such a letter only after having received the advice and consent
of
the tenured and tenure-track faculty members in the Department of
History.
8. To be eligible for
consideration
for reappointment for a third or fourth academic year, a tenure-track
faculty
member must at the very least have demonstrated proficiency in either
teaching
or research and have shown competency in the handling of all other
work.
Ordinarily a tenure-track faculty member is expected to
accomplish
some scholarly publication during the faculty member's first three
years
of service at UNO.
9. To earn tenure in the
UNO Department of History, a tenure-track faculty member must have
taught
at UNO for the number of years specified in the initial letter of
appointment
(see item 3 above) and be rated "distinguished" in either teaching
or research and "proficient" in each of the remaining two categories
in which every tenure-track faculty member must be annually rated.
The "notebook" of any faculty member being considered for
tenure in the UNO Department of History must include letters of
recommendation
from at least three established scholars in that faculty member's
fields
of teaching and historical research.
10. To be eligible for
promotion to the rank of Associate Professor in the UNO Department of
History,
a tenure-track faculty member is expected to have achieved at least
"proficiency"
in teaching and to have published -- or have had accepted for
publication
-- either a book published with a university or a commercial press or
substantial
publication in refereed journals. In every instance, the
quality,
as well as the quantity, of these scholarly publications will be
examined
and evaluated. A tenure-track faculty member who has
published
an equal or greater number of such works while serving at another
college
or university -- or while serving in a part-time or temporary full-time
position at UNO -- will normally be considered for promotion at UNO
during
the second year of teaching in a tenure-track position at UNO.
11. To be eligible for
promotion to the rank of Full Professor in the UNO Department of
History,
a tenured faculty member is expected to have consistently
achieved
"proficiency" or better in teaching and to have published one
book with a university or a commercial press or substantial publication
in refereed journals since having been promoted to Associate Professor.
12. In any aspects of
reappointment,
promotion, or tenure not specifically mentioned in items 1 through 11
above,
the "RPT procedures and standards of the UNO Department of History"
will conform to those of the UNO College of Arts & Sciences.
