During the Nazi liquidation of villages in Eastern Europe in 1941, the life of a young Jew was spared due to the efforts of a Ukranian woman who hid the young man’s Jewish identity. Over six decades later, the young man’s grandson, Jonathan Safran Foer, strikes out on a journey to Eastern Europe hoping to locate his family’s heroine. Guided only by old maps and an old photo, the young Jewish American learns more about his past and relationships than simply the identity of his grandfather’s savior.

In the Fall of 1526, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V sent his army southward into Italy against French forces allied with those of Pope Clement VII. The story focuses on Giovanni de Medici, who led the Papal troops and was wounded in battle.
