what does it mean?

The Brundtland Commission (1987) defined sustainable development as "...development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

In a broad sense, sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. While we most often think of the environment when using this term, it is important to also consider social and economic implications . Where we meet this definition in all three areas, we are sustainable.
