Summer 2002
Vol. XXII * * * NOTES FROM THE DEAN * * *

This was, for all of us, a difficult year. After receiving the best budget increase that even the old-timers could remember, we were faced with three rounds of budget cutting that eventually bled sixteen positions and more than $1.8 million from the Academic Affairs budget (and more than $2.3 million from the UNO budget). One of the positions that was eliminated was that of Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies, which means that my planned one-year temporary role in that position will become (at least) a two-year "opportunity". Consequently, I have already outlasted my predecessor, Shelton Hendricks, and am closing in on Chris Reed's tenure. Sadly, I cannot claim to have had the positive impact that Shelton had, but some very good things have happened in graduate education at UNO, with more to come in the immediate future. The new 152 hour option in the M Acct degree will serve our students well as they prepare for CPA licensure. I hope to see the approval of the new PhD in Information Technology and the Joint UNO/UNK MFA in Writing early in the Fall. Dramatic Arts is (are?) now Theatre, spelled "Theatre" not (entirely) because of my background, but to celebrate the French rather than the Germanic tradition. We have seen the elevation of 25 new Graduate Faculty Members and 17 new Graduate Faculty Fellows, increases that reflect the continuing growth in scholarship at UNO. Once again, a UNO graduate student took top honors in the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools Thesis Competition..

In Fall 2001, graduate enrollment exceeded 3000 students for the first time in our history, and our faculty taught more than 15,700 graduate student credit hours, also a record. In Spring 2002, both new records were broken, with 3,011 students and 16,189 credit hours. The coming biennium, perhaps the next two biennia, will bring additional budgetary stress. But through it all, UNO and its graduate programs will continue to grow, and I predict that those new records will also fall. All of this success and growth despite the dubious leadership of a part-time dean. The lesson, for anyone who is foolish enough to contemplate a career in university administration, is clear: inherit and maintain a fabulous staff, and make sure that you work at the university with the best faculty on the planet. Then stay out of the way and take credit for everything that happens. This university is on the right track, and it cannot be deterred or distracted by mere budget shortfalls.

I thank you all for your toleration of me throughout this past year, and hope that you have another year of tolerance in you.

Derek Hodgson
