Over thirty high school teachers came to the campus of the University of Nebraska at Omaha in June to participate in the nationally-recognized program, We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution. The program was sponsored by the Nebraska State Bar Foundation and the UNOmaha Department of Political Science.
We the People is designed to promote civic competence and responsibility among the nation’s elementary, middle, and high school students. The Citizen and the Constitution focuses on six units of study, which are listed below. Following the study of these six units comes simulated congressional hearings with student testimony. Through this study and exercise, students demonstrate their understanding of constitutional principles and have opportunities to evaluate and take and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues.
Twelve students from the Institute also took part in PSCI 8150, Seminar in Public Law. The products of their efforts -- book reviews and lesson plans -- are available here on the GovEdWeb site.
