Exhibition Dates: April 7 - May 4, 2013Omaha - Movement, machinery, mankind and molecules - these are the topics and themes of work from four graduating seniors from the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s (UNO) Department of Art and Art History. The works will be on display as part of a pair of gallery showings on campus at UNO.
Beginning with a pair of public receptions on Sunday, April 7, and running through Saturday, May 4, two displays of student artwork will be available for viewing at the UNO Art Gallery and Criss Library’s Osborne Family Gallery. Each reception runs from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
In the UNO Art Gallery, located on the main floor of the Weber Fine Arts Building on UNO’s Dodge Campus, visitors will see the final thesis projects of Emily Jordan, Maggie Jorgensen, Karen Follett and Dan Cavanagh.
Emily Jordan’s thesis draws on her study and performance of classical ballet to capture a dancer’s momentum through calligraphic brushstrokes. The finished product provides a permanent record of movement on the canvas.
Through sculpture and poetry, Maggie Jorgensen examines the beauty of metal and plastic objects. In her artist’s statement, Jorgensen writes: “No matter what we do, we are not able to recreate the beauty of nature with man-made materials.”
Karen Follett has produced realistic paintings from her travels to China, Africa and South America. She describes her work as “a discovery of the often overlooked subtle beauty of nature and the universal challenged and resilience of mankind.”
Through a collection of colorful drawings, Dan Cavanagh celebrates the concept of humanity understanding its origins through its atomic makeup. He writes: “The smallest part of us – our atoms – were created in the cores of massive stars. We are now stardust, trying to figure out what stardust is.”
The UNO Art Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. In the Osborne Family Gallery, also located on UNO’s Dodge Campus, 30 other seniors will showcase a broad range of media projects.
The Osborne Family Gallery is located on the main floor of the UNO Criss Library and is open during regular library hours, which are 7 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon to midnight on Sunday.
All events are free and open to the public and both galleries are accessible to people with disabilities.
