Department of Art and Art History Curriculum Changes

Among changes effective in Fall 2013 for students entering degree programs in the UNO Department of Art and Art History are the following:   

Studio Art

Any student admitted to the College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media may declare a Studio Art major.  However to declare a Studio Art concentration and to be eligible to enroll in classes restricted to Studio Art majors with declared concentrations, or to receive a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Arts (BASA) or a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from the Department, students must pass a Core I Portfolio review.  The Core I Review is normally conducted after a student has completed the Studio Core I courses, or the equivalents.

All BASA or BFA degrees will require the following Core I required studio courses and Art History Core required courses:

Core I (12 hours)
ART 1100: Foundation Drawing & Design: Two Dimensional Applications
ART 1110: Foundation Drawing & Design: Three Dimensional Applications
ART 1210: Foundations Theory & Practice: Color and Visual Literacy
ART 1220: Foundations Theory & Practice: Digital Media.
ART 2000: Core I Portfolio Review

Art History Core (12 hours)
ART 2050: Survey of Western Art History I
ART 2060: Survey of Western Art History II
Choose one course from each of the following two groups:

A) Modern history:  ART 4880: Modern Art I (Art of Europe and the Americas, 1850-1920), or ART 4890: Modern Art II (Art of Europe and the Americas, 1918-1968), or ART 4900: Contemporary Art History since 1968.

B) Pre-Modern history:  ART 4710 Ancient Art History, or ART 4720 Women in Ancient & Medieval Art, or ART 4730 Classical Art History, or ART 4750 L ate Roman and Byzantine Art History, or ART 4770 Early Medieval Art History, or ART 4780 Later Medieval Art History, or ART 4810 Northern European Renaissance Art History, or ART 4830 Italian Renaissance Art History, or ART 4850 Baroque and Rococo Art History.

There are four available BASA concentrations – Two Dimensional Arts, Three Dimensional Arts, Graphic Design, and Media Arts; and three available BFA concentrations – Two Dimensional Arts, Three Dimensional Arts, and Graphic Design.  Each concentration has its unique Core II studio, concentration, and elective courses.

Department of Art and Art History courses in each of these concentrations are presented in Appendix A – D.

Art History Minor

The Art History minor is reduced from 31 to 18 semester hours. Eliminated from requirements prior to 2013-14 are the Foreign Language (10 hours) and general History (3 hours) requirements.

Bachelor of General Studies

For the Bachelor of General Studies degree 30 hour Art concentration the following courses are required:
Core I (12 hours)

ART 1110: Foundation Drawing & Design: Three Dimensional Applications
ART 1210: Foundations Theory & Practice: Color and Visual Literacy

Art History Core (6 hours)

Art Concentration
A total of 12 hours (minimum of nine [9] must be UNO upper division [3000- and 4000-level]) from Department of Art and Art History BASA Two Dimensional Arts, Three Dimensional Arts, Graphic Design, or Media Arts Core II/Concentration courses or BAH Art History Options.

Notes:
1. In addition to changes noted above, requirements prior to 2013-14 for the Bachelor of Art History (BAH) and the BASA with K-12 Certification degrees will have only minor changes.

2. Titles and content of some courses will change from titles and content listed in Catalogues prior to 2013-14.

3. All courses designated as Lecture will have, during a regular semester, one hour of class time per week for each hour of course credit, while all courses designated as Studio will have two hours of class time per week for each hour of course credit.
