Best of 2013: Glacier Creek Dedication

It was a special year for UNO in 2013 with countless events, achievements, special guest visits and national recognitions for students, faculty, staff and alumni.

On Thursday, Sept. 12, UNO and the University of Nebraska Foundation celebrated the opening of a new research facility at Nebraska's Glacier Creek Preserve.

The new research facility, a retrofitted 19th-century barn, is home to classroom and research space for students from the UNO Department of Biology and area K-12 students.

UNO Offers Free Recreational Facility Access for Military Members, Their Families | Through Jan. 31

Service men and women returning home to the Metro for the holidays will have one less thing to worry about thanks to a UNO partnership allowing active duty military to use UNO's Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) facilities for free through January 31.

Second Annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Institute for UNO Faculty | Feb. 7-8

The Fund for Undergraduate Scholarly Experiences (FUSE) is hosting an event designed to help you develop/strengthen your program of undergraduate research and creative activity.

FUSE, which funds faculty-mentored undergraduate research and creative activity projects and is in its fourth year, has room to grow. Last year, it funded 80 grants. At capacity, it will fund roughly 120 grants a year. Note that each FUSE grant of $2500 (max) to the student is accompanied by a $500 professional development grant to the UNO faculty mentor (max of $1000 per year). Please consider attending this event.

Nominations Sought for 2014 Service Learning Awards

Below is information regarding the nominations for faculty and student service learning awards.

Nominations Sought for 2014 Service Learning Faculty Award

Each year, the Service Learning Academy recognizes one UNO faculty member who exemplifies excellence in the practice of service learning in his or her work. This recognition carries an honorarium of $500.

To be nominated, a faculty member must:
- Demonstrate the ability to develop and teach an effective service learning course that identifies at least one course objective to be understood and met through service learning, utilizing all the appropriate steps of the service learning pedagogy: (1) development of a reciprocal partnership with a community partner, (2) orienting the students to the agency, (3) issues and project expectations, (4) providing a meaningful service to the community partner, (5) evaluating outcomes of students and community partners and (6) requiring reflection/critical thinking about the experience in a structured way;
- Be supportive of service learning at UNO (i.e. through attendance at faculty/student presentations, Teaching Circles and mentoring faculty/students, etc.);
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding and appreciation of community agency issues (i.e. professionalism and cultural competency) and the capability of developing reciprocal, collaborative relations with community partners;
- Participate in scholarly dissemination about the pedagogy of service learning through presentation at peer-reviewed conferences and/or publication in scholarly journals, on-line journals or books ; and
- Hold a full or part-time teaching appointment with UNO.

The award will be presented at the Faculty Honors Convocation, Thursday, April 10, at 2 p.m. at the Alumni Center.

Nominations must be submitted to the UNO Service Learning Academy no later than Friday, January 10.

Nominations Sought for 2014 Service Learning Student Award

Each year, the Service Learning Academy recognizes one or a team of UNO student(s) who has excelled in the understanding/ integration of course objectives through the collaboration, planning and implementation of a community service learning course project. This recognition carries an honorarium of $250.

To be nominated, a student must have demonstrated and upheld in an outstanding way, the key principles of effective academic service learning:
- Mastering and integrating the course's academic objective(s), as demonstrated in the service learning course project activities and outcomes;
- Establishing and maintaining a collaborative relationship with community agency partner(s) and student team members; and
- Leading in identifying, creating and implementing strategies in the process of project implementation.

The award will be presented at the Student Honors Convocation, Friday, April 11 at 3 p.m. in the Strauss Performing Arts Center.

Nominations must be submitted to the UNO Service Learning Academy no later than Friday, January 10.

SIS+ Unavailable After December

The legacy Student Information System known as SIS+ will be removed from service on Dec. 31. Peoplesoft (commonly referred to as Mavlink) has been the official system of record for student academic and financial records since Fall 2010 and should provide all necessary information regarding a student record.
