Best of 2013: Women in IT Initiative

It was a special year for UNO in 2013 with countless events, achievements, special guest visits and national recognitions for students, faculty, staff and alumni.

UNO's new "Women in IT Fund," a strategic partnership with community leaders, sought to raise $400,000 for the purposes of doubling the number of women enrolled in UNO IS&T programs by 2015 and help fill the IT workforce deficit in Omaha.

UNO's Women in IT Initiative surpassed its Phase One goal of raising $250,000-- more than half of the program's two-year goal of raising $400,000 to be used towards encouraging women to invest in information technology education and careers.

The Women in IT Initiative was launched in May of this year by the UNO College of Information Science and Technology (IS&T).

For more information, visit the UNO homepage this afternoon.

Food Services Changes in January

Beginning in January, faculty, staff and students may notice some changes in the campus food operations at the Milo Bail Student Center Food Court, the Library Cafe and the HPER MavRec Cafe.

First, due to changes in Nebraska Regulations, and at the direction of University General Counsel, UNO will begin charging seven percent sales tax on food served on campus (5.5 percent state and 1.5 percent city). UNO is exempt from the City of Omaha Restaurant Occupation Tax.

Second, we value the support and business from the campus community and we have taken the opportunity, as a result of comparisons to our market competition, to make price reductions on many of our most popular menu items.

The MBSC Food Court plans to offer even more daily specials in 2014, including the cheeseburger special on Wednesdays and the macaroni & cheese bar on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. To keep updated on these and other specials, follow UNO Food Services on Twitter @MiloBailSC or friend Milo Bail on Facebook.

Finally, want to know how you can get 10 percent off the cost of your purchases at UNO Food Services venues? Simply use your MavCard. ALL PURCHASES made with your MavCard get a 10 percent discount, every day, in the MBSC Food Court, the Library Cafe, the HPER MavRec Cafe and the MBSC Convenience Store.

If you have any questions on this announcement, or any other matter involving UNO Food Services, please contact Jim Welch at jwelch@unomaha.edu.

Criss Library Offering Streaming Video Services to All Classes

Beginning spring semester 2014, the UNO Criss Library will open up streaming video services to all classes. Faculty must submit a video request form including a copy of their syllabus, the specific assignment requiring watching the video, and a statement clarifying the pedagogical rationale between the assignment and viewing the video.

A clear link between the watching of the video and the goal/objective of the class needs to be explicitly written for copyright purposes. You can find a form with instructions here. For more information on the process, please contact Jackie Skarda at jskarda@unomaha.edu.

Campus Holiday Safety Tips

As classes conclude and students prepare to go on Winter Break, the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) would like to remind students, faculty and staff about staying safe both on campus and off:

General Security
UNO reminds members of the Maverick community that crime can occur anywhere and at any time. To best prepare against these threats, UNO Campus Security provides a number of general safety tips:

- There is safety in numbers. Make sure you have someone with you if you do not feel safe in a particular area.
- Report suspicious and unusual activity to Campus Security at their emergency number, 402.554.2911, or the Omaha Police by calling 911.
- Lock your car and take your keys with you; do not leave your car idling with the keys inside.
- Use Operation I.D. to uniquely identify your property so it can more easily be recovered if it is stolen. Campus Security offers free engraving services for this purpose.
- Don’t leave personal belongings unattended.
- If you ride a bike or motorcycle, make sure to safely secure your vehicle with a proper lock.
- Shut your doors and windows tightly and lock them.
- If you are leaving your apartment or home unattended, use blinds or curtains to cover your windows.

Campus Security
During UNO’s Winter Break, the campus will be closed for the holidays from Sunday, Dec. 22 to Wednesday, Jan. 1; however, members of the UNO Campus Security team will be on campus providing regular patrols. Campus security will also provide complimentary vehicle services for stalled or locked vehicles, flat tires and gas, as well as personal escorts while on campus.

If there is an emergency on campus, contact campus security’s emergency number (402.554.2911). Campus Security can also be notified via the emergency button on UNO’s mobile site. If you have a non-emergency, you can reach Campus Security at 402.554.2648.
