Schwalb Center for Israel and Jewish Studies Presents The Gatekeepers
Join the Schwalb Center for Israel and Jewish Studies as they present The Gatekeepers followed by a discussion on the future of Israel and Palestine from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The Gatekeepers is a documentary on Israel's highly-secretive Shin Bet security agency which is comparable to America's CIA. Director Dror Moreh interviews six of the agency's former heads and provides their perspective on the events of post-1967 Israel. In the film, these men give a fresh viewpoint on the controversial nature of Israeli-Palestinian relations.
The screening of The Gatekeepers is scheduled for the conclusion of the class on Israel and Palestine (HIST 4730/8376), taught by Dr. Moshe Gershovich. As Gershovich notes, “The Gatekeepers presents the viewer with a candid lens through which to view the situation in the Middle East. It will serve as an excellent prelude for a serious discussion about the future of Israel and its relations with the Palestinians."

Community Emergency Response Team Training | Jan. 10-12
Join UNO's Emergency Management students Jan. 10-12, 2014, in learning how to prepare for and respond to incidents on our campus. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) provides free training to communities about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area.
CERT members learn basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using classroom training and hands-on scenarios, UNO’s CERT members learn how to assist themselves and others on campus following an incident when professional rescuers are not immediately available. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response activities by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their communities.
New OLLAS Report: "Invisible & Voiceless: Latinos in Council Bluffs, Iowa"
A recent report from the UNO Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS) demonstrated that Latinos in Council Bluffs, Iowa, remain virtually invisible and lack a voice in the city's key institutions, despite significant economic contributions to the economies of Iowa and Nebraska. The report combines census data and interviews with members of the mainstream Council Bluffs community as well as Latino voices gathered through interviews and a small number of Spanish-language workshops and focus groups. Recommendations are included in the report, which could help bridge the gap between Latinos and the rest of the Council Bluffs community.
