Service Learning Headlines

Beginning at 10 a.m., students from Hilary George's art class at Blackburn Alternative Program and Elmo Diaz, blacksmith at Blacksmith Shop Omaha, will install their truffula tree at Skinner Magnet Center. They will present it to students from Denise Adam's third grade class and Tomie Green's sixth grade class who collaborated on this P-16 service learning project with Blackburn over the past semester, creating the tree which stood in the Discovery Garden at Joslyn Art Museum throughout the month of October. The tree was made from repurposed shopping bags, reinforcing the theme of environmental awareness conveyed in Dr. Suess's book, The Lorax, and tied in to the October exhibit of original artwork from the book The Lorax at Joslyn Art Museum.

Beginning at noon, students from Beveridge Magnet Middle School International Studies class and ILUNO students will work at the Malcolm X Foundation to learn more about Malcolm X and work together on creating a large mural of Africa. In working together, the ILUNO students practice the English language with the Beveridge students while the Beveridge students learn more about the culture and customs of countries from around world.

UNO Theatre Presents Elektra | Dec. 4-7

When King Agamemnon returns from the Trojan War with his new concubine, his wife Clytemestra (who has taken Agamemnon's cousin, Aegisthus as a lover) kills them. Clytemestra believes the murder was justified, since Agamemnon had sacrificed their daughter. Our play begins eight years after Agamemnon's assassination. Elektra, enraged over the death of her father at the hand of her mother, spends her days waiting for her brother, Orestes, to arrive so they can wreak a bloody revenge. Fury will set her free and her love is a powerful and crippling mixture of hate, revenge, justice, and, still, palpable love. But will the arrival of Orestes bring justice?

Directed by Dr. Douglas Paterson, performances run Dec. 4-7 in UNO's Weber Fine Arts Building.

The house opens at 7 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. curtain for all performances.

For tickets, visit www.unomaha.edu/unotheatre or call the box office at 402.554.PLAY.

For performances, tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors/military/faculty/staff. Tickets are always free for all UNO students who present a valid UNO ID and $5 for all other students who present a valid school ID. The UNO Theatre Box Office now accepts all major credit cards.
