Bill Pickett Named December Employee of the Month!

Oh, what a difference you make, Bill Pickett! The senior director of involvement in Student Affairs, Pickett will be honored throughout the month of December for his work.

According to his nominators, "Since Maverick Village opened in August of 2008, Bill has continued to work hard on making housing on the University campus run smoothly. He took on more responsibilities when UNO acquired University Village, and has helped grow campus housing to where it is today. He shuffles back and forth between offices, and does this to make himself available to everyone."

The nominator continued, "Bill helped implement a new housing system, and it's helped out tremendously. He has brought so many great ideas to housing from other experiences and is always looking for new ways to fill housing and make the overall UNO experience great for students."

As Employee of the Month, Pickett received a certificate, lapel pin, choice of coffee cup or drink cup, a monetary award and use of a parking space. He also received a portrait with the chancellor and a letter of congratulations. He will be honored at an upcoming meeting of the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.

Last January, Human Resources announced the updated Employee of the Month-- "Oh" Award for "Oh, what a difference you make!"--program for UNO staff members. HR administers the program in conjunction with the Office of the Chancellor and Staff Advisory Council. They welcome nominations from faculty, staff, students, vendors and visitors. Nomination forms are available at here.

Congratulations, Bill!

December Health Insurance Premium Holiday

Thanks to positive results for our health plan, with lower-than-projected health claims for 2013, the University of Nebraska is offering all active employee members of our health plan a one-month "premium holiday" for December 2013. Employees will not pay medical or dental insurance premiums in December 2013. There will be no deductions on your December biweekly or monthly paychecks for medical or dental insurance premiums if you have coverage at UNO. Action is not required on the part of employees.

Your total savings will depend on which plan(s) you are enrolled in. For example, an employee enrolled in our Basic Option Employee Only medical and dental plans will realize gross savings of about $146 (before taxes), while an employee with Basic Option Family medical and dental coverage will realize gross savings of about $307 (before taxes).

If you have any questions, please contact your campus benefits office at 402.554.2465.

Writing Across the Curriculum Faculty Seminar | Apps. Due Dec. 2

UNO faculty are invited to participate in a two-day seminar on Writing Across the Curriculum. The seminar will be held in the Milo Bail Student Center on Thursday, Jan. 9, and Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Participating faculty will consider WAC's twin objectives--using writing tasks to promote students' understanding of course material in any discipline (writing to learn), and integrating writing tasks across the curriculum in order to support students' development as writers (learning to write). Faculty completing the seminar will be well prepared to teach discipline-based writing and writing-intensive courses.

During the two day seminar, interactive sessions will address the challenges students face when they undertake academic writing tasks, best practices for assignment design, responding to and evaluating student writing, and supporting multilingual writers. Participants will bring papers written by their own students, compare their assessments to those of their colleagues, and consider similarities and differences across disciplines.

The seminar is supported by the Writing Center and the Center for Faculty Development. Participants will receive $250 directed to their departments for travel and other professional expenses.

A brief application form is posted on the UNO Writing Center website, on the Faculty Resources page here.

Applications are due Dec. 2, and applicants will be notified by Dec. 6.

For more information contact Travis Adams, Writing Center director, at gtadams@unomaha.edu or 402.554.3587.
